The verse frames battlefield responsibility in moral terms: failure to restrain or overcome a dangerous warrior is treated as a grave lapse that nullifies religious and civic merit (iṣṭa–āpūrta) and even undermines one’s social-ethical standing (kṣātra, brāhmaṇya).
Sañjaya reports an intense, condemnatory sentiment about Droṇa’s ongoing threat: whoever lets Droṇa escape alive, or whoever is defeated by him, is declared unworthy of the fruits of sacrifice and public benefaction, as if their honor and dharma-status collapse under the weight of that failure.
