Aśvatthāmā’s Lamentation, Vow of Retaliation, and the Manifestation of the Nārāyaṇāstra
ity uktvā bharataśreṣṭha putro duryodhanas tava | vyādideśa tathā sainyaṃ tasmiṃs tamasi dāruṇe ||
The verse highlights how decisive will can operate even in conditions of moral and literal darkness; ethically, it invites reflection on the direction of one’s resolve—whether it serves dharma (restraint, right action) or fuels destructive conflict.
After making a statement (in the preceding context), Duryodhana immediately commands his troops to act, and Sañjaya reports this to Dhṛtarāṣṭra, emphasizing the terrifying atmosphere of darkness surrounding the battlefield.
