धृतराष्ट उवाच
The verse highlights how a leader’s attachment and fear surface when his side loses heart: Dhṛtarāṣṭra anxiously seeks reassurance about strategy and resolve. Ethically, it points to the tension between personal attachment (to ‘my sons’) and the impartial demands of dharma in war.
Dhṛtarāṣṭra questions Sanjaya about a moment in the battle when the Kaurava soldiers appear to falter or turn back. He asks what Duryodhana and the principal Kaurava champions (Bhīṣma, Droṇa, Kṛpa, Śakuni, Jayadratha, Aśvatthāmā, and Vikarṇa) did and what decision they made to respond to the crisis.
