The verse presents the ideal of inner withdrawal: mastery over the senses and the mind, culminating in freedom from saṅkalpa (self-centered willing and mental fabrication). It points to a knower’s stance of non-identification with sensory experience and intentionality.
A Brāhmaṇa speaker, within a didactic dialogue context, describes his state as one who does not engage with sensory objects and does not form intentions—setting the tone for a discussion on the condition of the jñānī (wise person) and the contrast between ritual engagement and ascetic inwardness.
