The verse highlights the ethical vulnerability of the mind: sensory contact can awaken desire even in one committed to austerity. It implicitly points to the need for vigilance (saṃyama) and discernment when encountering alluring objects, since a single moment of unguarded perception may lead to consequential actions.
Vaiśampāyana describes a sage seeing the apsaras Ghṛtācī immediately after her bath. Her beauty and youthful pride are emphasized, establishing the circumstance that triggers desire in the observer and sets the stage for the ensuing episode and its outcomes.
