Educational Q&A

The verse highlights a traditional Vedic idea: the gods are fundamentally reckoned as ‘thirty-three,’ while larger numbers like ‘thirty-three thousand’ or ‘thirty-three hundred’ function as expanded or conventional ways of speaking. It signals a summarized (saṁkṣepa) classification rather than a literal headcount.

Within the opening cosmological and genealogical framing of the Ādi Parva, the text briefly states a conventional enumeration of the divine orders, presenting the count of devas in a condensed, formula-like manner.
