Lord Vishnu (Nārāyaṇa) addressing Garuda (Khagendra/Vinatā-putra)
Concept: Nārāyaṇa as āśraya (support) of doṣa and guṇa alike; beings (‘nārāḥ’) attain sarva-mukti by anubandha/śaraṇāgati to Him.
Vedantic Theme: Brahman/Īśvara as the substratum (adhiṣṭhāna) of all opposites; liberation through surrender and God-connection rather than mere moral dualism.
Application: Cultivate śaraṇāgati: daily remembrance ‘Nārāyaṇa’ with the attitude ‘You are my sole support’; interpret life’s guṇas/doṣas as resting in Īśvara, reducing egoic struggle and increasing surrender.
Primary Rasa: shanta
Secondary Rasa: adbhuta
Related Themes: Garuda Purana: recurring teaching that Viṣṇu is the ultimate refuge and that nāma/smaraṇa grants release (general parallel)
This verse explains that Viṣṇu is called Nārāyaṇa because He is the āśraya (support/refuge) of nārās (beings) and of all states such as doṣa and guṇa; taking refuge in Him leads to complete release from bondage.
Rather than describing a ritual route, it gives the spiritual key: connection with Nārāyaṇa (nāra-anubandha) is presented as the liberating principle that frees beings from all binding conditions.
Cultivate daily refuge in Nārāyaṇa—through remembrance, recitation of His names, and ethical living—so that faults are replaced by virtues and inner bondage is reduced.
