The expansion of ignorance is explained in this verse. The first ignorance is to identify one’s material body, which is made of five elements, as the self, and the second is to accept something as one’s own due to a bodily connection. In this way, ignorance expands. The living entity is eternal, but because of his accepting nonpermanent things, misidentifying his interest, he is put into ignorance, and therefore he suffers material pangs.
This verse explains that in a body made of the five elements, the ignorant soul repeatedly clings to the false notions of “I” and “mine,” which produces wrong understanding and continued bondage.
He is conveying Lord Kapila’s analysis of how the jīva becomes bound—by misidentifying with the elemental body—so the listener can cultivate detachment and move toward liberation through spiritual knowledge and devotion.
Remember the body is elemental and temporary, observe “I/mine” thoughts as misidentification, and redirect identity toward service to the Supreme (bhakti), practicing humility and non-possessiveness.
