Diti’s Untimely Desire and the Birth-Cause of the Asura Line
Prelude to Hiranyākṣa–Varāha
ditis tu vrīḍitā tena karmāvadyena bhārata upasaṅgamya viprarṣim adho-mukhy abhyabhāṣata
When one is ashamed of an abominable action, one naturally becomes down-faced. Diti came to her senses after the abominable sexual intercourse with her husband. Such sexual intercourse is condemned as prostitution. In other words, sex life with one’s wife is equal to prostitution if the regulations are not properly followed.
This verse shows Diti feeling genuine shame for a blameworthy deed and approaching the sage humbly, indicating that remorse and submissive approach to spiritual authority are the beginning of rectification.
Because she recognized the act as condemnable and, feeling embarrassed and guilty, approached her husband-guru Kaśyapa in humility to address the consequences.
When one makes a serious mistake, acknowledge it honestly, approach a trustworthy spiritual or ethical guide with humility, and take corrective steps rather than defending the wrongdoing.
