मैत्रेयप्रश्नः—पुराणसंहिताप्रतिज्ञा च
Maitreya’s Questions and Parāśara’s Resolve to Teach

Sage Parasara (addressing Maitreya within the framing dialogue)
Speaker: Parasara
Topic: Authority and transmission of Purāṇic knowledge; assurance of right apprehension of the divine highest truth (devatā-pāramārthya).
Teaching: Devotional
Quality: authoritative
Concept: Right knowledge of the highest truth concerning the Divine is attainable and is destined to be firmly realized through authorized transmission.
Vedantic Theme: Brahman
Application: Seek śāstra through a trustworthy lineage and cultivate disciplined study so that understanding becomes precise rather than impressionistic.
Vishishtadvaita: The ‘highest truth of the Divine’ is knowable (not merely negated), supporting a personal Para-Brahman accessible through śāstra and grace.
Vishnu Form: Para-Brahman
Bhakti Type: Shanta
This verse frames the Purana as a faithfully transmitted compendium: the disciple is authorized to compile and preserve the tradition, grounding the text’s credibility in a guru-disciple lineage.
Here Parasara indicates that true teaching is not merely narrative but culminates in correct knowledge of the Divine “as it is” (yathāvat), setting a philosophical aim for the entire discourse.
Although the verse says “Devatā,” the Vishnu Purana’s framework identifies the Supreme Reality with Vishnu; thus the promise is of realizing Vishnu’s highest nature while compiling sacred history and cosmology.
