Soma Pavamāna’s ordered purification and forward flow through the pavitra for divine enjoyment and ritual success
Soma Pavamāna
Bright propulsive and exultant—celebrating the swift ‘undeviating’ flow of the purified Soma
R̥ṣi attribution is not provided in the input; precise identification requires concordance with the Rigvedic sources for these mantras and their assigned seer families.
Soma is pressed (suta) filtered through the woollen strainer (pavitra) then directed into grahas for offering to multiple deities; the verses accompany and sacralize this movement.
Mantra 1
Flow forth, Soma, sweet (to the taste), circulating (through the fleece), for Indra; (flow) for Mitra, for Pūṣan, for Bhaga.
Mantra 2
Flow forth, wholly, Soma, for the attainment of the prize; encompassing (and breaking) the obstructions, (overcoming) the haters; for us thou movest, to be crossed over (by thy aid).
Mantra 3
Purify thyself, Soma, (vast as) the mighty ocean, the father of the gods, encompassing all their abodes.
Mantra 4
Purify thyself, Soma, for mighty power; like a horse well-washed, a winner of the prize, (flow) for wealth.
Mantra 5
The bright Soma, entered (the strainer), fair, (flows) for exhilaration; in the lap of the waters, the wise (Soma goes) for Bhaga.
Mantra 6
For, following thee, Soma, when pressed, we exult; for great (dominion) and for the winning of prizes, O purifying (Soma), thou advancest and enterest (the rite).
Mantra 7
Who are those manifest heroes, of one seat, the youthful followers of Rudra, and possessed of good steeds?
Mantra 8
Agni, thee to-day, as (men urge) a steed, with praises; (thee) as beneficent power, heart-touching; may we prosper by thy invocations.
Mantra 9
Manifest, O vigorous (ones), the prize the prize-winners have attained; (by) the impulsion of the god Savitṛ, heaven-leading; as steeds, win ye (the victory).
Mantra 10
Purify thyself, Soma, splendid, of fair-flowing stream, great, undeviating, proceeding in due order (through the appointed purifiers) for the sacrifice.
It celebrates Soma as he is pressed and purified through the strainer, then made fit to enter the ritual vessels and be offered in proper sequence, bringing splendor and success.
They indicate the intended divine recipients of the purified Soma: Indra for strength, Mitra for harmony and order, Pūṣan for guidance and nourishment, and Bhaga for rightful share and prosperity.
It points to Soma’s correct ritual progression—pressing, filtering, entering the vessels, and being offered—so that the sacrifice proceeds according to the established sequence.
