Mantra 1
यज्ञायज्ञा वो अग्नये गिरागिरा च दक्षसे प्रप्र वयममृतं जातवेदसं प्रियं मित्रं न शंसिषम्
At each sacrifice, unto Agni, with hymn after hymn, and for his efficacious power, do we again and again proclaim the immortal Jātavedas, the beloved, as a friend.
Mantra 2
पाहि नो अग्न एकया पाह्यू3त द्वितीयया पाहि गीर्भिस्तिसृभिरूर्जां पते पाहि चतसृभिर्वसो
Protect us, Agni, with one (hymn); protect us also with the second; protect (us) with praises, with three (praises), O lord of nourishment; protect (us) with four (praises), O Vasu.
Mantra 3
बृहद्भिरग्ने अर्चिभिः शुक्रेण देव शोचिषा भरद्वाजे समिधानो यविष्ठ्य रेवत्पावक दीदिहि
With mighty flames, O Agni, with bright radiance, O divine (minister), with thy brilliant lustre, when kindled at the (rite of) Bharadvāja, O youngest (of the gods), O opulent purifier, shine forth.
Mantra 4
त्वे अग्ने स्वाहुत प्रियासः सन्तु सूरयः यन्तारो ये मघवानो जनानामूर्वं दयन्त गोनाम्
In thee, Agni, duly invoked, may the wise be acceptable; those bountiful patrons of men, who are directors (of the rite), bestow abundance of kine.
Mantra 5
अग्ने जरितर्विश्पतिस्तपानो देव रक्षसः अप्रोषिवान्गृहपते महां असि दिवस्पायुर्दुरोणयुः
Agni, O praiser, thou art the lord of the people; burning, O god, the Rākṣasas: unremiss, O lord of the house, thou art great; the guardian of heaven, abiding in the dwelling.
Mantra 6
अग्ने विवस्वदुषसश्चित्रं राधो अमर्त्य आ दाशुषे जातवेदो वहा त्वमद्या देवां उषर्बुधः
Agni, radiant, immortal, (bestow) the bright bounty of the dawns upon the worshipper; and, O Jātavedas, awakened at the dawn, do thou to-day convey the gods (to our sacrifice).
Mantra 7
त्वं नश्चित्र ऊत्या वसो राधांसि चोदय अस्य रायस्त्वमग्ने रथीरसि विदा गाधं तुचे तु नः
Thou, illustrious (Agni), by thy succour, O Vasu, impel towards us abundant benefactions; thou art the charioteer of this wealth: do thou, O Agni, discover for us a firm ford, even when we are in strait.
Mantra 8
त्वमित्सप्रथा अस्यग्ने त्रातरृतः कविः त्वां विप्रासः समिधान दीदिव आ विवासन्ति वेधसः
Thou verily, O Agni, art of wide renown in this (sacrifice); thou art the protector of the rite, the sage: thee, radiant (as thou art), the priests, kindling (thee) with fuel, worship and honour, (they) the wise ordainers (of the ceremonial).
Mantra 9
आ नो अग्ने वयोवृधं रयिं पावक शंस्यम् रास्वा च न उपमाते पुरुस्पृहं सुनीती सुयशस्तरम्
Do thou, Agni, come unto us, O purifier, and bestow upon us that wealth which augmenteth vigour, which is worthy to be celebrated; and, O thou who art approached with oblations, grant us also that much-desired (prosperity), of good guidance, and of most excellent renown.
Mantra 10
यो विश्वा दयते वसु होता मन्द्रो जनानाम् मधोर्न पात्रा प्रथमान्यस्मै प्र स्तोमा यन्त्वग्नये
To Agni, who, the gladdening Hotṛ of men, dispenses all wealth, (and) to whom the foremost (libations), like vessels of sweet Soma, are presented—let our praises go forth.
It praises Agni as brilliantly kindled fire who protects the right order of the sacrifice (ṛta) and grants prosperity, strength, good guidance, and renown.
‘Pāvaka’ highlights Agni’s purifying power in the rite, while ‘trātā of ṛta’ means he safeguards the properly ordered sacrificial performance and carries offerings without obstruction.
They support the establishment and glorification of the sacrificial fire: the chanters kindle and praise Agni’s radiance, affirm his ritual authority, and then ask him to bestow celebrated, vitality-increasing wealth and auspicious outcomes.
