Sūta

Concept: Kārttika-vrata is a sustained discipline with a defined start (Āśvina Pūrṇimā) and end (Udbodhinī), requiring collected attention (samāhita).

Application: Mark the vrata window on a calendar; choose daily niyamas you can keep from Āśvina Pūrṇimā through Prabodhinī/Udbodhinī (lamp, japa, sāttvika diet, charity).

Primary Rasa: shanta

Secondary Rasa: adbhuta

Type: forest

Visual Art Cues: {"scene_description":"Sūta, seated before the sages, points to a palm-leaf calendar while describing the vrata’s arc from Āśvina Pūrṇimā’s full moon to Udbodhinī’s auspicious dawn. Above the assembly, a symbolic sky-band shows the full moon of Āśvina on one side and Viṣṇu awakening on a jeweled serpent couch on the other, linking timekeeping to divine rhythm.","primary_figures":["Sūta","Śaunaka","assembled ṛṣis","Vishnu (symbolic vignette, Ananta-śayana)"],"setting":"Forest yajña pavilion with ritual implements; a stylized celestial band illustrating lunar timing and Viṣṇu’s awakening.","lighting_mood":"golden dawn","color_palette":["moon silver","deep teal","saffron","antique gold","copper brown"],"tanjore_prompt":"Tanjore painting style: Sūta teaching the Kārttika-vrata timeline to sages, gold-leaf accents on the full moon disc and on Viṣṇu’s ornaments in a small upper vignette of Ananta-śayana awakening; rich reds/greens, ornate borders, embossed calendar motifs and lamp icons.","pahari_prompt":"Pahari miniature style: gentle didactic scene with Sūta and sages, a luminous full moon over a forest canopy, and a small inset of Viṣṇu awakening on Śeṣa; delicate brushwork, cool silvers and blues balanced with warm saffron robes.","kerala_mural_prompt":"Kerala mural style: structured panel with Sūta at center, sages flanking, and a top register showing the moon and Viṣṇu on Śeṣa; bold outlines, natural pigments, rhythmic ornament bands, emphasis on sacred time symbols.","pichwai_prompt":"Pichwai cloth painting style: decorative calendar-like border of lamps and lotus motifs; central scene of kathā with Sūta; upper medallion of Viṣṇu awakening (Udbodhinī/Prabodhinī) framed by floral arabesques, deep blue ground with gold highlights."}

Audio Atmosphere: {"recitation_mood":"narrative","suggested_raga":"Durga","pace":"moderate-narrative","voice_tone":"authoritative","sound_elements":["tanpura drone","soft bell punctuations","forest ambience","page/palm-leaf rustle","conch shell (faint, ceremonial)"]}

Sandhi Resolution Notes: कुर्याद्यावत् = कुर्यात् + यावत्; यावदुद्बोधिनी = यावत् + उद्बोधिनी.

FAQs

It should begin on the full-moon day (Paurṇamāsī) of the month Āśvina, undertaken with mental focus.

Udbodhinī is the “awakening” day, commonly associated with the time when Lord Viṣṇu is ritually understood to awaken after the Cāturmāsya period; the vow is to be observed until that day arrives.

It emphasizes disciplined observance (vrata) carried out with steadiness of mind (samāhita), presenting devotion and self-regulation as the proper way to practice the rite.
