Educational Q&A

Hospitality offered in a sacred setting should be met with gratitude and restraint; when martial pride (yuddhamada) overrides dharma, a person becomes incapable of honoring even rightful reverence, and power turns into wrongdoing.

A powerful visitor reaches a sage’s hermitage and is respectfully received by the sage’s wife, but he is so intoxicated with war-pride that he does not appreciate or accept the hospitality in the proper spirit, foreshadowing further violation of the āśrama’s sanctity.
