Educational Q&A

Charity is not judged only by the act of giving; it must be guided by discernment (pātra/apātra). Giving wealth indiscriminately to the unworthy can generate ethical and practical harm, so one should understand the consequences of apātra-dāna and give with discrimination.

Śalya addresses his interlocutor in a critical, admonishing tone, pointing out that the person is giving away substantial wealth ‘like a deluded man’ and warning that this shows ignorance of the faults that arise when gifts are given to unworthy recipients.
