This is a colophon marking the close of a chapter. Its ethical-literary function is to frame the war narrative within an ordered textual structure, reminding the listener that even violent events are being reported through a disciplined tradition of narration and classification (parva, adhyāya, thematic headings).
The verse does not advance the battlefield action directly; it formally concludes the seventy-third chapter of the Bhīṣma Parva, identifying it as part of the Bhīṣma-vadha section and noting its focus on duel-combat.
