Mahavakya

य एतदथर्वशिरोऽधीते । प्रातरधीयानो रात्रिकृतं पापं नाशयति । सायमधीयानो दिवसकृतं पापं नाशयति । तत्सायं प्रातः प्रयुञ्जानः पापोऽपापो भवति । मध्यन्दिनमादित्याभिमुखोऽधीयानः पञ्चमहापातकोपपातकात्प्रमुच्यते । सर्ववेदपारायणपुण्यं लभते । श्रीमहाविष्णुसायुज्यमवाप्नोतीत्युपनिषत् ॥१२॥

यः एतत् अथर्व-शिरः अधीते । प्रातः अधीयानः रात्रि-कृतम् पापम् नाशयति । सायम् अधीयानः दिवस-कृतम् पापम् नाशयति । तत् सायम् प्रातः प्रयुञ्जानः पापः अपापः भवति । मध्यन्दिनम् आदित्य-अभिमुखः अधीयानः पञ्च-महा-पातक-उपपातकात् प्रमुच्यते । सर्व-वेद-पारायण-पुण्यम् लभते । श्री-महा-विष्णु-सायुज्यम् अवाप्नोति । इति उपनिषत् ।

ya etad atharvaśiro’dhīte | prātar adhīyāno rātrikṛtaṃ pāpaṃ nāśayati | sāyam adhīyāno divaskṛtaṃ pāpaṃ nāśayati | tat sāyaṃ prātaḥ prayuñjānaḥ pāpo’pāpo bhavati | madhyandinam ādityābhimukho’dhīyānaḥ pañcamahāpātakopapātakāt pramucyate | sarvavedapārāyaṇapuṇyaṃ labhate | śrīmahāviṣṇusāyujyam avāpnotīty upaniṣat ||12||

Sesiapa yang mempelajari Atharvaśiras ini: membacanya pada waktu fajar memusnahkan dosa yang dilakukan pada malam hari; membacanya pada waktu senja memusnahkan dosa yang dilakukan pada siang hari. Mengamalkannya pada senja dan fajar, seseorang menjadi (seakan) berdosa namun juga tanpa dosa (melampaui ikatan). Membacanya pada tengah hari dengan menghadap Surya, ia dibebaskan daripada lima dosa besar dan dosa-dosa kecil. Ia memperoleh pahala seperti melafazkan seluruh Veda; dan mencapai penyatuan (sāyujya) dengan Śrī Mahāviṣṇu—demikianlah Upaniṣad ini.

Whoever studies this Atharvaśiras: studying at dawn destroys the sin committed at night; studying in the evening destroys the sin committed by day. Practicing it evening and morning, one becomes (one who is) sinful and (yet) sinless. Studying at midday facing the Sun, one is released from the five great sins and the subsidiary sins. One obtains the merit of reciting all the Vedas; one attains union (sāyujya) with Śrī Mahāviṣṇu—thus (ends) the Upaniṣad.
