Rudrākṣa Māhātmya — The Greatness of Rudraksha
शतादिकसहस्रस्य विधिरेष प्रकीर्तितः । तदभावे प्रकारोन्यः शुभः संप्रोच्यते मया
śatādikasahasrasya vidhireṣa prakīrtitaḥ | tadabhāve prakāronyaḥ śubhaḥ saṃprocyate mayā
Demikianlah kaedah yang ditetapkan bagi bacaan beratus-ratus dan beribu-ribu telah diumumkan. Jika itu tidak dapat dilakukan, akan kujelaskan sekarang satu lagi tatacara yang membawa keberkatan.

Sthala Purana: In the Viśveśvarasaṃhitā’s Vārāṇasī-centered frame, Śiva as Viśveśvara grants accessible upāyas (means) for devotees of varying capacity; when full counts (hundreds/thousands) are not feasible, an alternate auspicious procedure is taught as a compassionate concession (anugraha).
Significance: Assurance that sincere practice (even with reduced capacity) remains spiritually efficacious; emphasizes Śiva’s grace over mere quantitative rigor.
It teaches that disciplined practice (vidhi) for mantra-recitation is valued, yet Shiva’s path remains compassionate—when ideal counts or rules cannot be met, an alternative auspicious method is still spiritually effective when done with devotion and purity.
In Vidyeshvara teachings, Saguna Shiva is approached through tangible worship—Linga-puja and mantra-japa with prescribed counts. This verse frames those counts as a method, while allowing substitute procedures so the devotee can continue Linga-centered devotion without interruption.
It points to mantra-japa done in counted measures (hundreds/thousands), and indicates that if those counts are not feasible, one should adopt an alternative auspicious regimen—typically simplified japa with steady attention, cleanliness, and devotional intent.
