The Greatness of Bhasma, Rudrākṣa, and the Name of Śiva

Tattva Level: pashu
Shiva Form: Mahadeva
Jyotirlinga: Viśvanātha
Sthala Purana: In the Viśveśvarasaṃhitā, Kāśī/Avimukta is praised as the supreme kṣetra where Viśveśvara grants śānti and mokṣa; the ‘nectar of Śiva’s Name’ functions as the immediate upāya for beings scorched by pāśa (bondage).
Significance: Nāma-smaraṇa and darśana of Viśveśvara are taught as direct means to inner peace (śānti) and loosening of pāśa; especially efficacious in Kāśī (Avimukta).
Type: panchakshara
It teaches that nāma-japa (repetition of Śiva’s Name) is a direct, grace-filled remedy that cools and extinguishes the burning impressions of pāpa, granting śānti and moving the soul toward liberation under Pati (Śiva).
In Shaiva practice, the Linga is worshiped with mantra and nāma; this verse emphasizes that the living presence of Saguna Śiva is accessed through His Name, making japa an essential limb of Linga-upāsanā.
Regular chanting of the Panchākṣarī—“Om Namaḥ Śivāya”—as nāma-amṛta, ideally with Rudrākṣa japa and Tripuṇḍra (bhasma) as supportive Shaiva disciplines, is the practical takeaway.
