नन्दिकेशावतारवर्णनम् (Nandikeśa Avatāra Varṇanam) — “Account of the Descent/Origin of Nandikeśvara”
शिलाद उवाच । शतक्रतो सुरेशान सन्तुष्टो यदि मे प्रभो । अयोनिजं मुत्युहीनं पुत्रमिच्छामि सुव्रतम्
śilāda uvāca | śatakrato sureśāna santuṣṭo yadi me prabho | ayonijaṃ mutyuhīnaṃ putramicchāmi suvratam
Śilāda berkata: “Wahai Śatakratu, wahai Penguasa para dewa—jika Tuanku berkenan kepadaku, wahai Prabhu, aku mendambakan seorang putera yang suci ikrarnya: tidak lahir dari rahim dan bebas daripada kematian.”

It shows a devotee’s aspiration to transcend ordinary karma-bound birth and mortality, pointing toward the Shaiva ideal that true freedom from death is ultimately attained through Shiva’s grace and right vow (suvrata).
The request for an ‘ayonija’ and ‘mṛtyuhīna’ son anticipates the theme that only the Supreme Lord (often approached as Saguna Shiva through Linga worship) can grant boons that touch liberation and transcend worldly limitation.
The verse highlights suvrata (pure observance). In Shaiva practice this is supported by japa of the Panchakshara (Om Namaḥ Śivāya), worship of the Shiva Linga with devotion, and disciplined vrata—especially on auspicious days like Mahāśivarātri.
