Jaṭilāvatāra-Parīkṣā: Pārvatyāḥ Tapasāṃ Parīkṣaṇam
The Jaṭilā Episode and the Testing of Pārvatī’s Austerity
Lord Shiva
Tattva Level: pati
Shiva Form: Dakṣiṇāmūrti
Shakti Form: Pārvatī
Role: teaching
It presents Shiva as the supreme Guru (Pati) who reveals the inner discipline of Shiva-dhyana to Devi, indicating that liberation arises through right contemplation, grace, and correct method rather than mere outer action.
By showing a “divine form” and the procedure of meditation, the verse supports Saguna upasana—holding Shiva’s auspicious form (including Linga as a supported focus) as an aid to steady the mind and awaken devotion that matures into deeper realization.
It points to a guided dhyana-krama: assume a sanctified posture, turn the senses inward (symbolized by the downward gaze), and contemplate Shiva’s auspicious nature with mantra-supported focus (commonly the Panchakshara, Om Namaḥ Śivāya) as taught by the Guru.
