The Account of Śambhu’s Incarnation that Dispels Doubts Concerning Women
नन्दीश्वर उवाच । इति तामुपदिश्याथ भिक्षुवर्ण्यतनुः शिवः । स्वरूपं दर्शयामास परमं भक्तवत्सलः
nandīśvara uvāca | iti tāmupadiśyātha bhikṣuvarṇyatanuḥ śivaḥ | svarūpaṃ darśayāmāsa paramaṃ bhaktavatsalaḥ
Nandīśvara berkata: Setelah menasihatinya demikian, Śiva—yang tubuh-Nya mengambil rupa seorang pengemis suci—lalu menyingkapkan wujud-Nya yang tertinggi, kerana Dia amat mengasihi para bhakta.
Nandishvara (Nandi)
Tattva Level: pati
Shiva Form: Bhikṣāṭana
Sthala Purana: Not a Jyotirliṅga episode; the focus is Śiva’s compassionate self-disclosure after instruction, a narrative of grace rather than a site-origin.
Significance: Darśana of the Lord’s ‘parama-svarūpa’ is framed as the fruit of receptivity to instruction (upadeśa) and devotion (bhakti).
It highlights Śiva’s bhakta-vātsalya: after testing and instructing the seeker through a humble disguise, He grants direct vision of His supreme reality, indicating that grace follows right understanding and devotion.
The verse reflects the Shaiva Siddhanta movement from accessible forms (Saguna—approachable, even as a mendicant) toward revelation of the supreme svarūpa; Linga-worship similarly begins with a sacred form and culminates in realizing Śiva as the highest Pati.
Adopt humility and devotion, then meditate on Śiva’s form while repeating the Panchakshara (Om Namaḥ Śivāya); the implied takeaway is that disciplined bhakti and contemplation invite Śiva’s revealing grace.
