Vṛṣeśākhya-Śivāvatāra and the Initiation of the Kṣīrasāgara-Manthana
Churning of the Milk Ocean
नभोवाण्युवाच । हे देवा असुराश्चैव मन्थध्वं क्षीरसागरम् । भवताम्बलबुद्धिर्हि भविष्यति न संशयः
nabhovāṇyuvāca | he devā asurāścaiva manthadhvaṃ kṣīrasāgaram | bhavatāmbalabuddhirhi bhaviṣyati na saṃśayaḥ
Suara dari langit berfirman: “Wahai para Dewa dan Asura, hendaklah kamu mengacau Samudra Susu. Dengan itu, kekuatan serta tekad yang jernih akan bangkit dalam dirimu—tiada syak lagi.”
Nabhovani (a heavenly voice)
Tattva Level: pasha
Sthala Purana: The verse belongs to the samudra-manthana prelude; it functions as a divine injunction rather than a Jyotirliṅga-sthala narrative.
Cosmic Event: Samudra-manthana (churning of the Ocean of Milk) is announced as the means to restore strength and discernment.
The command to churn the Ocean of Milk points to inner “churning” (sādhana) where opposing tendencies are harnessed and refined, producing bala (steadfast spiritual strength) and buddhi (discerning clarity) that prepare the soul (paśu) to move toward Shiva (Pati).
Though the verse speaks through a heavenly oracle, its thrust aligns with Saguna Shiva worship: disciplined effort and cooperation in dharma lead to purification and power. In Shaiva practice, Linga-upāsanā becomes that “churning,” steadily converting restlessness into focused devotion and right understanding.
The takeaway is sustained inner churning through japa and discipline—especially Panchakshara mantra japa (“Om Namaḥ Śivāya”) with regular Tripuṇḍra (bhasma) application and Rudrāksha dhāraṇa—to cultivate bala and buddhi.
