The Recital/Teaching of the Thousand Names of Śiva
ईशः पिनाकी खट्वांगी चित्रवेषश्चिरंतनः । तमोहरो महायोगी गोप्ता ब्रह्मा च धूर्जटिः
īśaḥ pinākī khaṭvāṃgī citraveṣaściraṃtanaḥ | tamoharo mahāyogī goptā brahmā ca dhūrjaṭiḥ
Dialah Īśa, Tuhan Yang Maha Berdaulat; pemegang Pināka; pengusung khaṭvāṅga; Yang berwajah serba indah, Yang Purba lagi Kekal. Dialah penghalau kegelapan, Mahāyogī, Pelindung; dan juga Brahmā—prinsip penciptaan—serta Dhūrjaṭi, Tuhan berambut gimbal suci.

The verse strings together Shiva’s epithets to teach that the same Pati (Supreme Lord) is both transcendent (ciraṃtana, Īśa) and immanent (goptā), removing inner darkness (tamohara) through yogic grace (mahāyogī), leading the soul toward liberation.
These names are saguna indicators—Pināka-bearer, Dhūrjaṭi, khaṭvāṅga-holder—supporting devotion through form, while pointing to Shiva’s deeper function as the eternal Lord who dispels ignorance; thus Linga-worship becomes a focused doorway to the formless truth.
Meditate on Shiva as Mahāyogī and Tamohara while chanting the Panchākṣarī (Om Namaḥ Śivāya); visualize the matted-haired Dhūrjaṭi and offer bhasma (tripuṇḍra) as a reminder of impermanence and purification of ignorance.
