तत स्सुग्रीवमासीनं काञ्चने परमासने।महार्हास्तरणोपेते ददर्शादित्यसन्निभम्।।।।दिव्याभणचित्राङ्गं दिव्यरूपं यशस्विनम्।दिव्यमाल्याम्बरधरं महेन्द्रमिव दुर्जयम्।।।।दिव्याभरणमालाभिः प्रमदाभि स्समावृतम्।संरब्धतररक्ताक्षो बभूवान्तकसन्निभः।।।।
tataḥ sugrīvam āsīnaṁ kāñcanē paramāsanē |
mahārhāstaraṇōpētē dadarśa ādityasannibham ||
divyābharaṇacitrāṅgaṁ divyarūpaṁ yaśasvinam |
divyamālyāmbaradharaṁ mahēndram iva durjayam ||
divyābharaṇamālābhiḥ pramadābhiḥ samāvṛtam |
saṅrabdhatararaktākṣō babhūvāntakasannibhaḥ ||
Kemudian dia melihat Sugrīva duduk di atas singgahsana emas yang mulia, beralas hamparan mahal, bersinar laksana matahari: termasyhur, berwajah laksana makhluk kayangan, anggota tubuhnya dihiasi perhiasan menakjubkan; mengenakan kalungan dan busana ilahi, sukar ditundukkan seperti Indra. Dikelilingi para wanita yang berhias perhiasan dan kalungan surgawi, mata Lakṣmaṇa memerah oleh amarah yang memuncak, tampak bagaikan Antaka—Dewa Maut—sendiri.
Lakshmana saw famous Sugriva, difficult to be conquered, seated on a golden throne strewn around with cushions, decorated with ornaments of different colours, endearing in appearance, decked with beautiful garlands and clothes. He was surrounded by women adorned with most fascinating ornaments and garlands. Bewildered at the sight, Lakshmana's eyes turned red in anger. He appeared like Yama, lord of death.
The verse juxtaposes royal pleasure with urgent duty: dharma requires a ruler to prioritize pledged obligations over indulgence, and it warns how neglect of duty provokes righteous anger in allies.
Lakṣmaṇa enters the inner quarters and finds Sugrīva luxuriating on a throne amid women; the sight inflames Lakṣmaṇa’s anger because Rāma’s mission is pending.
Zeal for duty and loyalty to Rāma—Lakṣmaṇa’s intolerance of delay in a righteous undertaking, though his anger also signals the need for measured speech.
