Concept: Properly performed vows generate multi-life auspicious results—health, longevity, prosperity, beauty, and noble birth—showing karma’s continuity across births.
Application: Choose one vow and practice it correctly—timing, purity, charity, and devotion—rather than many half-kept promises; track observance by lunar calendar.

Sandhi Resolution Notes: dīrghāyuḥ + ārogya + kula + ativṛddhibhiḥ → dīrghāyurārogyakulātivṛddhibhiḥ (स्वर-सन्धि, समास-समुच्चय); pumān + rūpa → pumānrūpa (व्यञ्जन-सन्धि); kula + anvitaḥ → kulānvitaḥ (स्वर-सन्धि); muhuḥ + muhuḥ + janmani → muhurmuhurjanmani (विसर्ग-लोप/रुत्व); samyak + vratam → samyakvratam (व्यञ्जन-सन्धि).
Śītarashmi (“cool-rayed”) is a common Sanskrit epithet, most often referring to the Moon (Candra/Soma). In this verse Bhīṣma addresses a figure by that epithet while requesting instruction about a vow.
He asks for the vow that grants long life, good health, flourishing of one’s family/lineage, and also beauty and noble birth—repeatedly across successive births.
It reflects the Purāṇic karmic framework: disciplined religious observance (vrata) is presented as producing enduring merit that can shape favorable conditions across multiple lifetimes.
