Bhīṣma

Concept: Ritual efficacy depends on proper timing (day-part) and sacred geography (tīrtha selection), especially for śrāddha.

Application: When performing ancestral rites, consult tradition for appropriate timing and choose a sanctified setting; even at home, create tīrtha-like purity through cleanliness, mantra, and charity.

Primary Rasa: adbhuta

Secondary Rasa: shanta

Type: tirtha

Visual Art Cues: {"scene_description":"Bhīṣma, aged yet radiant with discipline, sits on a simple seat facing the sage Pulastya, hands folded in respectful inquiry. Behind them, a map-like panorama hints at many tīrthas—rivers, ghats, and distant temples—suggesting that the question will open into a pilgrimage geography of śrāddha.","primary_figures":["Bhīṣma","Pulastya","attendant sages (optional)"],"setting":"forest āśrama court with a clear view toward a river and distant pilgrimage routes","lighting_mood":"golden dawn","color_palette":["saffron robe","earth brown","river blue","sage green","sunrise gold"],"tanjore_prompt":"Tanjore painting style: Bhīṣma in dignified posture asking Pulastya, both with gold-leaf halos; background includes stylized river ghats and miniature temple icons representing tīrthas, ornate arch frame, rich reds/greens, embossed gold for jewelry and halos.","pahari_prompt":"Pahari miniature style: refined dialogue scene under a tree canopy, delicate facial expressions of inquiry and calm instruction; a winding river and tiny ghats in the distance, cool blues and greens with soft sunrise tones.","kerala_mural_prompt":"Kerala mural style: bold outlined figures of Bhīṣma and Pulastya in a teaching posture, simplified forest and river motifs; strong red/yellow/green palette, temple-wall composition emphasizing the question-and-answer dynamic.","pichwai_prompt":"Pichwai cloth painting style: a central dialogue framed by lotus borders; in the background, decorative vignettes of ghats and sacred ponds arranged like a mandala of tīrthas, deep blues and gold with intricate floral patterns."}

FAQs

He asks two things: the proper time within the day to perform śrāddha, and which tīrthas make śrāddha especially fruitful.

“Dvija” means “twice-born,” typically a Brahmin (or a member of the three varṇas with Vedic initiation); Bhīṣma is addressing a learned ritual authority.

Ritual propriety and efficacy—doing ancestral rites at the right time and place to maximize spiritual merit (puṇya) and benefit.
