Adhyaya 45 — Jaimini’s Cosmological Questions and the Opening of Markandeya’s Account of Primary Creation
स्पर्शमात्रस्तु वै वायूरूपमात्रं समावृणोत् ।
ज्योतिश्चापि विकुर्वाणं रसमात्रं ससर्ज ह ॥
sparśamātras tu vai vāyū rūpamātraṃ samāvṛṇot | jyotiś cāpi vikurvāṇaṃ rasamātraṃ sasarja ha ||
Vāyu, yang hanya mempunyai sentuhan sebagai sifatnya, diselubungi oleh rupa (rūpa). Dan jyotis juga, setelah berubah, menghasilkan sari halus rasa (rasa-tanmātra).

Each successive emergence ‘contains’ or ‘covers’ the prior, suggesting increasing complexity. It encourages seeing sensory pleasures (taste, etc.) as later, compounded phenomena—not ultimate fulfillment.
Sarga: continues the tanmātra sequence toward the next gross element (water).
The progression from form to taste hints at condensation: from light/visibility toward liquidity and savor—symbolically, from cognition toward affect and attachment, which must be mastered.
