Virāṭa-parva, Adhyāya 40

ऑरड.2 का. | हि 7 यु चत्वारिशो< ध्याय: अर्जुनका उत्तरको शमीवृक्षसे अस्त्र उतारनेके लिये आदेश वैशम्पायन उवाच तां शमीमुपसंगम्य पार्थो वैराटिमब्रवीत्‌ | सुकुमारं समाज्ञाय संग्रामे नातिकोविदम्‌,वैशम्पायनजी कहते हैं-जनमेजय! उस शमीवृक्षके समीप पहुँचकर अर्जुनने विराटकुमार उत्तरको सुकुमार तथा युद्धकी कलामें पूर्णतया कुशल न जानकर उससे कहा --

Vaiśampāyana uvāca | tāṃ śamīm upasaṅgamya pārtho vairāṭim abravīt | sukumāraṃ samājñāya saṅgrāme nātikovidam ||

Vaiśampāyana berkata: Wahai Janamejaya, setelah menghampiri pohon śamī itu, Pārtha (Arjuna) berkata kepada Putera Uttara, anak Virāṭa. Mengetahui dia masih lembut dan belum mahir dalam seni peperangan, Arjuna pun bersabda—
