प्रत्यक्ष ते महाराज शातयिष्ये बिभीतकम् | अहं हि नाभिजानामि भवेदेवं न वेति वा,यह सुनकर बाहुकने रथ खड़ा करके राजासे कहा--“शत्रुसूदन नरेश! आप जो कह रहे हैं, वह संख्या परोक्ष है। मैं इस बहेड़ेके वृक्षको काटकर उसके फलोंकी संख्याको प्रत्यक्ष करूँगा। महाराज! आपकी आँखोंके सामने इस बहेड़ेको का्टूँगा। इस प्रकार गणना कर लेनेपर वह संख्या परोक्ष नहीं रह जायगी। बिना ऐसा किये मैं तो नहीं समझ सकता कि (फलोंकी) संख्या इतनी है या नहीं
bṛhadaśva uvāca |
pratyakṣa te mahārāja śātayiṣye bibhītakam |
ahaṃ hi nābhijānāmi bhaved evaṃ na veti vā ||
Bṛhadaśva berkata: “Wahai raja agung, akan aku jadikan bilangan buah pada pohon bibhītaka ini nyata di hadapan matamu sendiri dengan menumbangkannya. Kerana tanpa berbuat demikian, aku tidak dapat mengetahui dengan sebenar-benarnya sama ada bilangannya memang demikian atau tidak.”
