Damayantī’s Distress, Proclamation of the Svayaṃvara, and the Gods’ Request
तेषां द्रक्ष्यसि पाउ्चालि गात्राणि पृथिवीतले । क्रव्यादे: कृष्पमाणानि भक्ष्यमाणानि चासकृत्,'पांचालराजकुमारि! तुम देखोगी कि उन दुष्टोंके शरीर इस पृथ्वीपर मांसाहारी गीदड़- गीध आदि पशु-पक्षियोंद्वारा बार-बार घसीटे और खाये जा रहे हैं
teṣāṁ drakṣyasi pāñcāli gātrāṇi pṛthivītale | kravyādaiḥ kṛṣyamāṇāni bhakṣyamāṇāni cāsakṛt ||
Yudhiṣṭhira berkata: “Wahai Pāñcālī, engkau akan melihat tubuh mereka terbaring di atas bumi—diseret ke sana sini dan berulang kali dilahap oleh makhluk pemakan daging seperti serigala dan burung hering.”
युधिछिर उवाच
The verse underscores moral causality: adharma leads to destruction and disgrace. Yudhiṣṭhira’s words present a dharmic assurance that wrongdoing will not remain unpunished, even if justice is delayed.
Yudhiṣṭhira addresses Draupadī (Pāñcālī), foretelling the violent end of their wrongdoers: their bodies will fall on the battlefield and be dragged and eaten by scavengers. It expresses both grief and a firm resolve that justice will ultimately prevail.
