Mahābalānū parvatakūṭamātrān viṣāṇinaḥ paśya gajān narendra | Sthitān nideśe naravarya dhātuḥ neśe balasyeti ca cared adharmaṃ ||

Mārkaṇḍeya berkata: “Wahai raja, lihatlah gajah-gajah perkasa ini—besar laksana puncak gunung, bertaring panjang. Bahkan mereka pun tegak mematuhi ketetapan Sang Pencipta. Maka, wahai insan terbaik, janganlah melakukan adharma kerana angkuh berkata, ‘Akulah tuan segala kekuatan.’”

Educational Q&A

Power is not a license for wrongdoing. Even the strongest beings remain within the Creator’s ordinance; therefore a ruler should avoid adharma born of pride and the delusion of being supreme.

Mārkaṇḍeya points Yudhiṣṭhira to mighty, mountain-like elephants as a living example: despite their strength, they follow the ordained order. He uses this to counsel the king toward humility and righteous conduct.
