अग्निर्यश्न शिवो नाम शक्तिपूजापरश्न सः | दुःखार्तानां च सर्वेषां शिवकृत्‌ सततं शिव:,'शिव” नामसे प्रसिद्ध जो अग्नि हैं, वे शक्तिकी आराधनामें लगे रहते हैं। समस्त दुःखातुर मनुष्योंका सदा ही शिव (कल्याण) करते हैं, इसलिये उन्हें 'शिव” कहते हैं

agnir yaḥ śivo nāma śaktipūjāparaś ca saḥ | duḥkhārtānāṃ ca sarveṣāṃ śivakṛt satataṃ śivaḥ ||

Mārkaṇḍeya berkata: “Api yang masyhur dengan nama ‘Śiva’ itu sentiasa tekun dalam pemujaan kepada Śakti. Ia tanpa henti membawa kesejahteraan kepada semua yang ditimpa dukacita; maka ia disebut ‘Śiva’—yang membawa kebaikan dan keberkatan.”
