The Arrival of Maitreya and the Admonition to Duryodhana
pañcānāṃ pāṇḍuputrāṇām avijñāto mahāripuḥ | pañcānām indriyāṇāṃ tu śokāveśa ivātulaḥ ||
Vidura berkata: Seorang musuh besar yang tiada bandingan, tidak diketahui oleh lima putera Pāṇḍu, tiba-tiba mendatangi mereka—bagaikan gelombang dukacita yang tak terukur, mendadak menimpa lima pancaindera.
The verse highlights ethical vigilance: danger can arrive unrecognized and suddenly overwhelm one’s stability, just as grief can seize the senses without warning. It implies the need for alertness, self-control, and discernment in adversity.
Vidura describes how an unknown and formidable enemy suddenly approached the five Pāṇḍavas. The comparison to grief overwhelming the five senses emphasizes the abruptness and intensity of the threat, and the Pāṇḍavas’ lack of prior awareness.
