Educational Q&A

A just settlement offered with respect and without greed can avert massive harm. Yudhiṣṭhira emphasizes that dharma in politics includes restraint (asaṅga), honouring opponents (satkāra), and avoiding contempt (anavamāna), because humiliation and attachment fuel escalation toward war.

In the peace negotiations of the Udyoga Parva, Yudhiṣṭhira states that if Duryodhana would return the rightful share (understood as half the kingdom) respectfully and without greedy attachment, Yudhiṣṭhira’s aim would be achieved and the Kauravas would escape the looming terror of war and its consequences.
