Arjuna’s Address to Krishna: Agency, Action, and Immediate Counsel
The verse highlights the ethical importance of intention (bhāva) behind speech: one should speak from goodwill and inquiry, not from reproach, egoistic display of learning, anger, or a desire to quarrel.
In the Udyoga Parva context of tense negotiations before war, the speaker clarifies that his words were spoken affectionately to understand the other’s intent, not to insult, boast, or provoke—framing the exchange as sincere counsel rather than hostility.
