Reconciling Contingency and Human Effort
brūyād apratirūpāṇi yathā māṃ vaktum arhasi | mādhava! māṃ bhīmasenaṃ suparijñāya kaścid api manuṣyaḥ mama prati tādṛśāny anucitāni vacanāni yathā tvaṃ bravīṣi kathaṃ brūyāt? |
The verse highlights the ethics of speech and honor: words should be fitting to the person addressed and grounded in true understanding. Bhīma implies that knowing someone’s character entails speaking in a manner that respects their dignity and role, especially in a tense moral-political crisis.
In the Udyoga Parva’s pre-war negotiations and counsel, Bhīmasena responds sharply to Mādhava (Kṛṣṇa), objecting that Kṛṣṇa’s remarks sound unworthy or disparaging toward him. The exchange reflects Bhīma’s intense temperament and the strain between restraint/diplomacy and the urge for decisive action.
