उद्योगपर्व — अध्याय 33: धृतराष्ट्र-विदुर संवादः (विदुरनीतिः)

कर्णि, नालीक और नाराच नामक बाणोंको शरीरसे निकाल सकते हैं, परंतु कटु वचनरूपी बाण नहीं निकाला जा सकता; क्योंकि वह हृदयके भीतर धँस जाता है ।। वाक्सायका वदनान्निष्पतन्ति यैराहत: शोचति रात्र्यहानि । परस्य नामर्मसु ते पतन्ति तान्‌ पण्डितो नावसूजेत्‌ परेभ्य:,कट वचनरूपी बाण मुखसे निकलकर दूसरोंके मर्मस्थानपर ही चोट करते हैं; उनसे आहत मनुष्य रात-दिन घुलता रहता है। अतः विद्वान पुरुष दूसरोंपर उनका प्रयोग न करे

karṇī nālīkaś ca nārāca-nāmaka-bāṇān śarīrāt nirhartum śakyate, kintu kaṭu-vacana-rūpaṃ bāṇaṃ na nirhartum śakyate; sa hi hṛdaye antar eva nimajjati. vāk-sāyakā vadanān niṣpatanti yair āhataḥ śocati rātry-ahāni; parasya nāma marmasu te patanti, tān paṇḍito nāvasūyet parebhyaḥ.

Vidura berkata: Anak panah seperti karṇī, nālīka dan nārāca boleh dicabut dari tubuh; tetapi anak panah berupa kata-kata pedih tidak dapat dicabut, kerana ia menembus jauh ke dalam hati. Anak panah kata-kata meluncur dari mulut; orang yang terkena akan berdukacita siang dan malam. Ia jatuh pada titik-titik paling peka dan genting milik orang lain—maka orang bijaksana tidak patut melemparkan ucapan demikian kepada sesiapa.

Harsh words wound more deeply than physical weapons: bodily arrows can be removed, but cruel speech lodges in the heart and causes lasting grief. Therefore the wise restrain their speech and avoid striking others at their vulnerable points.
