ततोऊहं विप्रमुख्यैस्तैर्यैरस्मि पतितो रथात्‌ । उत्थापितो धृतश्चैव मा भैरिति च सान्त्वित:,राजेन्द्र! ऐसी प्रार्थना करके बाणोंसे क्षत-विक्षत हुआ मैं रात्रिके अन्तमें प्रभातके समय दाहिनी करवटसे सो गया। महाराज! कुरुश्रेष्ठ! तत्पश्चात्‌ जिन ब्राह्मणशिरोमणियोंने रथसे गिरनेपर मुझे थाम लिया और उठाया था तथा “डरो मत” ऐसा कहकर सान्त्वना दी थी, उन्हीं लोगोंने मुझे सपनेमें दर्शन दे मेरे चारों ओर खड़े होकर जो बात कही थी, उसे बताता हूँ, सुनो--

tato ’haṃ vipramukhyais tair yair asmi patito rathāt | utthāpito dhṛtaś caiva mā bhair iti ca sāntvitaḥ | rājendra! etāṃ prārthanāṃ kṛtvā bāṇaiḥ kṣata-vikṣato ’haṃ rātry-ante prabhāta-samaye dāhiṇī-karavaṭena suptaḥ | mahārāja! kuruśreṣṭha! tataḥ paścāt ye brāhmaṇa-śiromaṇayas rathād patane māṃ dhṛtvā samutthāpitavantaḥ “mā bhaiḥ” iti ca sāntvayām āsuḥ, te eva svapne darśanaṃ dattvā mama caturdiśaṃ sthitvā yāṃ vācam ūcuḥ, tāṃ te kathayiṣyāmi—śṛṇu ||

Bhīṣma berkata: “Kemudian para Brahmana terunggul itu—yang telah menangkapku ketika aku jatuh dari rata, mengangkatku, menyokongku, dan menenangkanku dengan kata-kata ‘Jangan takut’—(muncul lagi). Wahai raja! Setelah memanjatkan permohonan itu, dengan tubuhku koyak-rabak oleh anak panah, aku berbaring pada penghujung malam, ketika fajar, mengiring ke sebelah kanan. Wahai raja agung, yang terbaik dalam kalangan Kuru! Sesudah itu, para resi Brahmana yang sama itu mengurniakan kepadaku suatu penglihatan dalam mimpi; mereka berdiri mengelilingiku dan mengucapkan beberapa kata. Akan kuceritakan apa yang mereka katakan—dengarlah.”

Educational Q&A

Even amid the violence and injury of war, fear is to be met with steadiness and moral reassurance; the verse highlights the protective, guiding role of righteous Brahmins and the importance of receiving counsel with a composed mind.

Bhishma recounts that after being wounded by arrows and falling from a chariot, he was helped and consoled by eminent Brahmins. Later, at dawn, he lay down on his right side and then saw those same Brahmins appear in a dream, standing around him and speaking words he is about to report.
