न शर्म प्राप्स्यसे राजन्नुत्क्रम्य सुहृदां वच: । अधर्म्यमयशस्यं च क्रियते पार्थिव त्वया,राजन! तू हितैषी सुहृदोंकी आज्ञाका उल्लंघन करके कल्याणका भागी नहीं हो सकेगा। भूपाल! तू सदा अधर्म और अपयशका कार्य करता है'

na śarma prāpsyase rājann utkramya suhṛdāṃ vacaḥ | adharmyam ayaśasyaṃ ca kriyate pārthiva tvayā ||

Wahai Raja! Jika tuanku melanggar nasihat sahabat-sahabat yang benar-benar menginginkan kebaikan tuanku, tuanku tidak akan memperoleh ketenteraman atau kesejahteraan yang sejati. Wahai penguasa bumi! Apa yang tuanku lakukan itu tidak berlandaskan dharma dan akan membawa aib.

A ruler who disregards the advice of sincere well-wishers and acts against dharma forfeits inner peace (śarma) and earns disgrace (ayaśas). Ethical governance requires heeding good counsel and avoiding adharmic action.

Vaiśampāyana, in narrating the events of the Udyoga Parva, addresses a king and warns him that by violating the words of his well-intentioned friends he is engaging in unrighteous, shame-bringing conduct and will not attain welfare.
