Mātali’s Proposal for Guṇakeśī and Sumukha’s Audience with Indra

vāsukiḥ takṣakaḥ karkoṭakaḥ dhanaṃjayaḥ kāliyo nahuṣaḥ kambalaḥ aśvataraḥ bāhukūṇḍaḥ maṇināgaḥ āpūraṇaḥ khagaḥ vāmanaḥ elapatraḥ kukuraḥ kukuṇaḥ āryakaḥ nandaḥ kalāśaḥ potakaḥ kailāsakaḥ piṃjarakaḥ airāvataḥ sumanomukhaḥ dadhimukhaḥ śaṅkhaḥ nandaḥ upanandaḥ āptaḥ koṭarakaḥ śikhī niṣṭhūrikaḥ tittiriḥ hastibhadraḥ kumudaḥ mālyapiṇḍakaḥ padmanāmakaḥ dvau nāgau puṇḍarīkaḥ puṣpaḥ mudgaraparṇakaḥ |

mātale! yadi iha kaścid varaḥ tubhyaṃ rocate tad paśya ||
Narada said: “Karavīra, Pīṭharaka, Saṃvṛtta, Vṛtta, Piṇḍāra, Bilvapatra (the bilva-leaf eater), Mūṣikāda (mouse-eater), Śirīṣaka; Vāsuki, Takṣaka, Karkoṭaka, Dhanaṃjaya, Kāliya, Nahuṣa, Kambala, Aśvatara, Bāhukūṇḍa, Maṇināga, Āpūraṇa, Khaga, Vāmana, Elapatra, Kukura, Kukuṇa, Āryaka, Nanda, Kalāśa, Potaka, Kailāsaka, Piṃjaraka, Airāvata, Sumanomukha, Dadhimukha, Śaṅkha, Nanda, Upananda, Āpta, Koṭaraka, Śikhī, Niṣṭhūrika, Tittiri, Hastibhadra, Kumuda, Mālyapiṇḍaka, the two serpents named Padma, Puṇḍarīka, Puṣpa, Mudgaraparṇaka; and again Karavīra, Pīṭharaka, Saṃvṛtta, Vṛtta, Piṇḍāra, Bilvapatra, Mūṣikāda, Śirīṣaka, Dilīpa, Śaṅkhaśīrṣa, Jyotiṣka, Aparājita, Kauravya, Dhṛtarāṣṭra, Kuhura, Kṛśaka, Virajā, Dhāraṇa, Subāhu, Mukhara, Jaya, Badhira, Andha, Viṣuṇḍi, Virasa, and Surasa—these and many other Nāgas are descendants of Kaśyapa. Mātali, if any boon or choice among them pleases you here, then look and decide.”
नारद उवाच
The verse emphasizes lineage and rightful identification: beings are situated within inherited lines (here, Kaśyapa’s descendants), and choices (vara) should be made with clear knowledge of who and what is being chosen.
Narada enumerates many Nāgas—naming prominent serpent-kings and others—and tells Mātali to look among them and select whichever ‘choice/boon’ he prefers.
