यद्‌ ब्रूथ तच्छुतं सर्व ममापि शृणुतानघा: । संधि: कथं वै भविता मम शक्रस्य चोभयो: । तेजसोर्हि द्वयोदेवा: सख्यं वै भविता कथम्‌,“इससे तुम्हें सुख मिलेगा और इन्द्रके सनातन लोकोंपर भी तुम्हारा अधिकार रहेगा।' ऋषियोंकी यह बात सुनकर महाबली वृत्रासुरने उन सबको मस्तक झुकाकर प्रणाम किया और इस प्रकार कहा--“महाभाग देवताओ! महर्षियो तथा गन्धर्वों! आप सब लोग जो कुछ कह रहे हैं, वह सब मैंने सुन लिया। निष्पाप देवगण! अब मेरी भी बात आपलोग सुनें। मुझमें और इन्द्रमें संधि कैसे होगी? दो तेजस्वी पुरुषोंमें मैत्रीका सम्बन्ध किस प्रकार स्थापित होगा?”

Śalya uvāca: yad brūtha tac chrutaṁ sarvaṁ mamāpi śṛṇutānaghāḥ | sandhiḥ kathaṁ vai bhavitā mama śakrasya cobhayoḥ | tejasor hi dvayor devāḥ sakhyaṁ vai bhavitā katham ||

Śalya berkata: “Segala yang kamu ucapkan telah aku dengar; kini dengarlah pula kata-kataku, wahai yang tidak berdosa. Bagaimanakah mungkin benar-benar terjalin suatu perjanjian damai antara aku dan Śakra (Indra)? Wahai para dewa, bagaimana persahabatan dapat ditegakkan antara dua makhluk yang menyala-nyala dengan kuasa?”
