Mantri-Parīkṣā — Testing Ministers, Securing Counsel, and Ethical Criteria for Advisers (अध्याय ८४)
श्रेयसो लक्षणं चैतद् विक्रमो यस्य दृश्यते । कीर्तिप्रधानो यश्व स्थात् समये यश्न तिषछति,श्रेष्ठ पुरुषका लक्षण इस प्रकार है--जिसका पराक्रम देखा जाता हो, जिसके जीवनमें कीर्तिकी प्रधानता हो, जो अपनी प्रतिज्ञापर स्थिर रहता हो, सामर्थ्यशाली पुरुषोंका सम्मान करता हो, जो स्पर्धाके अयोग्य पुरुषोंसे ईर्ष्या न रखता हो, कामना, भय, क्रोध अथवा लोभसे भी धर्मका उल्लंघन न करता हो, जिसमें अभिमानका अभाव हो, जो सत्यवान्, क्षमाशील, जितात्मा तथा सम्मानित हो और जिसकी सभी अवस्थाओंमें परीक्षा कर ली गयी हो, ऐसा पुरुष ही तुम्हारी गुप्त मन्त्रणामें सहायक होना चाहिये
śreyaso lakṣaṇaṃ caitad vikramo yasya dṛśyate | kīrtipradhāno yaśasvī syāt samaye yaś na tiṣṭhati ||
Bhishma berkata: “Inilah tanda keunggulan sejati: seorang lelaki yang keberaniannya nyata, yang hidupnya terutama dipandu oleh pencarian nama baik yang terhormat, dan yang tidak meninggalkan maruah serta reputasinya yang wajar ketika saat genting tiba.”
