(हुताशनमुखैर्देवैर्धार्यतेी सकल॑ जगत्‌ । हवि:प्रथमभोक्ता यस्तस्मै होत्रात्मने नमः ।।) अग्नि जिनके मुख हैं, वे देवता सम्पूर्ण जगत्‌को धारण करते हैं, जो हविष्यके सबसे पहले भोक्ता हैं, उन अग्निहोत्रस्वरूप परमेश्वरको नमस्कार है ।। महतस्तमस: पारे पुरुषं हृतितेजसम्‌ | य॑ ज्ञात्वा मृत्युमत्येति तस्मै ज्ञेयात्मने नमः:,जो अज्ञानमय महान्‌ अन्धकारसे परे और ज्ञानालोकसे अत्यन्त प्रकाशित होनेवाले आत्मा हैं, जिन्हें जान लेनेपर मनुष्य मृत्युसे सदाके लिये छूट जाता है, उन ज्ञेयरूप परमेश्वरको नमस्कार है

bhīṣma uvāca |

hutāśanamukhair devair dhāryate sakalaṁ jagat | haviḥprathamabhoktā yas tasmai hotrātmane namaḥ ||

mahatas tamasaḥ pāre puruṣaṁ hṛtitejasam | yaṁ jñātvā mṛtyum atyeti tasmai jñeyātmane namaḥ ||

Bhīṣma berkata: Seluruh dunia ditopang oleh para dewa yang bermulut Api; kepada Tuhan yang, sebagai diri sang hotṛ, menjadi yang pertama menikmati persembahan—sembah sujud. Di seberang kegelapan besar kejahilan berdiri Sang Purusha, bersinar dengan cahaya pengetahuan batin; dengan mengenal-Nya, manusia melampaui maut. Kepada Tuhan yang merupakan inti segala yang harus diketahui—sembah sujud.

Educational Q&A

The verse links ritual and realization: the same Supreme is present as Agni who receives offerings in sacrifice and as the inner, knowable Reality beyond ignorance; knowing that Reality leads to freedom from death (mokṣa).

In the Śānti Parva’s instruction setting, Bhīṣma offers a reverential praise (namaskāra) to the Supreme—first through the Vedic-sacrificial image of Agni and then through a jñāna-oriented description of the transcendent Puruṣa.
