Atithi-satkāra and the Consolation of Wise Counsel (अतिथिसत्कारः प्रज्ञानवचनस्य च पराश्वासनम्)

नारायण: स विश्वात्मा तेनास्य शितिकण्ठता । यह देख रुद्र तपस्यामें लगे हुए उन ऋषियोंपर टूट पड़े। तब विश्वात्मा नारायणने अपने हाथसे उन आक्रमणकारी रुद्रदेवका गला पकड़ लिया। इसीसे उनका कण्ठ नीला हो जानेके कारण वे “नीलकण्ठ' के नामसे प्रसिद्ध हुए

nārāyaṇaḥ sa viśvātmā tenāsya śitikaṇṭhatā |

“Nārāyaṇa, Diri Sejagat yang meliputi segala, menangkap Rudra pada lehernya ketika Rudra menerjang untuk menyerang para resi yang sedang bertapa. Kerana lehernya menjadi biru gelap akibat cekikan itu, Rudra kemudian masyhur dengan gelaran ‘Nīlakaṇṭha’ (Yang Berleher Biru).”

Educational Q&A

Dharma includes safeguarding those devoted to spiritual discipline (tapas) and curbing destructive power when it turns against the innocent. Even formidable divine force (Rudra) is shown as subject to the higher order upheld by the universal Self (Nārāyaṇa).

Rudra, in a fierce surge, attacks sages absorbed in austerities. Nārāyaṇa intervenes, seizes Rudra by the throat, and the resulting dark-blue throat becomes the etiological reason for Rudra’s epithet “Nīlakaṇṭha.”
