Impermanence, Svabhāva, and Śuka’s Resolve for Yoga
The verse models dharmic inquiry: when a subtle issue arises, one should seek a reasoned conclusion grounded in śāstra and clarified by a competent, discerning teacher. It also underscores respect for intellectual and scriptural authority while aiming at ethical resolution.
Yājñavalkya addresses a brāhmaṇa interlocutor, requesting to hear the interlocutor’s considered judgment on the topic being discussed. He motivates the request by praising the brāhmaṇa as foremost in śāstric learning, confident in exposition, and exceptionally intelligent.
