Adhyāya 284: Tapas as a Corrective to Household Attachment
Parāśara’s Instruction
ततस्तु युक्तो गृह्नीयान्नामान्याशु यथाक्रमम् । ईप्सितान् लभते सो<र्थान् भोगान् कामांश्न मानव:
tatastu yukto gṛhnīyān nāmāny āśu yathākramam | īpsitān labhate so 'rthān bhogān kāmāṁś ca mānavaḥ ||
Kemudian, dengan disiplin yang benar dan perhatian yang rapi, hendaklah dia segera mengambil (menghafal/melafazkan) nama-nama itu menurut tertibnya. Orang itu memperoleh tujuan yang dihajati—kemakmuran, kenikmatan, dan segala yang diinginkan.
भीष्म उवाच
Orderly, disciplined practice—specifically taking up the prescribed names in proper sequence—leads to the attainment of human goals such as artha (benefit/wealth), bhoga (enjoyment), and kāma (desired objects).
Bhīṣma continues an instruction in the Śānti Parva, advising a methodical practice: the practitioner should promptly take up the relevant names in due order, and the text states the resulting fruits—obtaining sought-after aims and enjoyments.
