Bhūta-guṇa-saṃkhyāna

Enumeration of the Properties of the Elements and Cognitive Faculties

सर्वाण्येवानुपूर्व्येण यद्‌ यदानुविधीयते । अविभागगता बुद्धिर्भावे मनसि वर्तते,बुद्धि सम्पूर्ण इन्द्रियोंमेंसे जब जिस इन्द्रियके साथ हो जाती है, उस समय पहले अलग न होनेपर भी वह बुद्धि संकल्पात्मक मन एवं घटादि पदार्थोमें उपस्थित होती है अर्थात्‌ बुद्धिसे अनुगृहीत होनेपर ही कोई भी इन्द्रिय संकल्पजनित घट-पटादिको क्रमशः ग्रहण करती है

sarvāṇy evānupūrveṇa yad yad anuvidhīyate | avibhāgagatā buddhir bhāve manasi vartate ||

Vyāsa berkata: Apa jua yang digerakkan akan berjalan menurut tertibnya. Walaupun akal-budi (buddhi) pada hakikatnya tidak terbahagi, ia menjadi berfungsi dalam minda (manas) dan dalam medan objek; dan apabila akal-budi menyelaraskan diri dengan sesuatu fakulti indera, fakulti itu—disokong oleh daya penetapan minda—menangkap objek (seperti periuk atau kain) setahap demi setahap. Maka pengetahuan dan persepsi inderawi berlaku hanya apabila indera dipimpin serta diperkasakan oleh buddhi.

Educational Q&A

Perception and cognition occur in an ordered sequence and depend on the coordinating power of buddhi. Although buddhi is essentially one and undivided, it functions through mind and senses; only when a sense faculty is ‘supported’ by buddhi (and mediated by the mind’s saṅkalpa) does it grasp an object.

In Śānti Parva’s philosophical instruction, Vyāsa explains the inner mechanics of experience: the intellect, mind, and senses cooperate so that objects are apprehended progressively. The verse is part of a broader teaching on self-mastery and right understanding as foundations for dharma.
