आत्मदर्शन-उपदेशः (Ātma-darśana Upadeśa) — Mind, Senses, and the All-pervading Self
कृष्णद्वैपायन व्यासं पुत्रो वैयासकि: शुक:ः । पप्रच्छ संदेहमिमं छिन्नधर्मार्थसंशयम्,अंगों और उपनिषदोंसहित सम्पूर्ण वेदोंका अध्ययन करके व्यासपुत्र शुकदेवने नैष्ठिक कर्मको जाननेकी इच्छासे अपने पिता श्रीकृष्णद्वैपायन व्यासकी धर्मज्ञानविषयक निपुणता देखकर उनसे अपने मनका संदेह पूछा। उन्हें यह विश्वास था कि पिताजीके उपदेशसे मेरा धर्म और अर्थविषयक सारा संशय दूर हो जायगा
kṛṣṇadvaipāyanaṃ vyāsaṃ putro vaiyāsakiḥ śukaḥ | papraccha saṃdeham imaṃ chinnadharmārthasaṃśayam ||
Bhishma berkata: Shuka, putera Vyasa—Krishna Dvaipayana—mendekati ayahandanya lalu bertanya tentang keraguan ini, demi memperoleh penyelesaian yang jelas terhadap kekusutan fikirannya mengenai dharma dan artha. Setelah menguasai Veda beserta cabang-cabangnya dan Upanishad, Shuka ingin memahami nishthika-karma, disiplin yang teguh; dan dia percaya bahawa ajaran ayahandanya akan melenyapkan segala kebimbangan moral dan praktikalnya.
भीष्म उवाच
Even after extensive scriptural study, clarity in dharma and artha often requires humble inquiry and guidance from a competent teacher; ethical certainty is presented as something to be ‘cut through’ by right instruction, not merely accumulated learning.
Bhishma introduces a frame-story: Shuka, having studied the Vedas and Upanishads, approaches his father Vyasa and asks him to resolve his doubts about right conduct (dharma) and practical aims (artha), confident that Vyasa’s counsel will remove his uncertainty.
