हेतुवादान्‌ प्रवदिता वक्ता संसत्सु हेतुमत्‌ । आक्रोष्टा चाभिवक्ता च ब्रह्म॒वाक्येषु च द्विजान्‌,“मैं सभाओंमें जाकर तर्क और युक्तिकी बातें ही अधिक बोलता। जहाँ दूसरे ब्राह्मण श्रद्धापूर्वक वेद-वाक्योंपर विचार करते, वहाँ मैं बलपूर्वक आक्रमण करके उन्हें खरी-खोटी सुना देता और स्वयं ही अपना तर्कवाद बका करता था

hetuvādān pravaditā vaktā saṃsatsu hetumat | ākroṣṭā cābhivaktā ca brahmavākyeṣu ca dvijān |

Bhīṣma berkata: Dalam majlis-majlis, aku dahulu sering mengemukakan hujah dan berbicara dengan kata-kata yang sarat alasan serta pertikaian. Dan ketika para brāhmaṇa yang terpelajar dengan penuh श्रद्धा menimbang ucapan-ucapan suci Veda, aku pula menyerang mereka dengan keras—mencaci dan membantah—semata-mata untuk mempamerkan logik pertelingkahan milikku sendiri.
